THE FESTIVAL GOES TV - really great
When I go back to Poland and my friends ask me "What what the festival like? "apart from" really good "and" very innovative ", the first thing that will come to my mind is lots of visual art. Films, pictures, lights ... I must say, that I was "very surprised" ... and "very funny" because thanks to the visual arts of the plays I understood more - more than I expected to.
The first time, I saw a film being used during this festival (the "Rotkäppchen" play) I thought it was "ganz innovativ". But later (after one of the "Brecht" plays) I started to wonder if it´s not just a "ganz leicht" solution to the magic-chicken-problem of having nothing to say. Lets just play a film for the audience. Mavbe they stare at the screen and won´t notice the bad acting, lack of any other ideas.

Why was the "magic chicken" so magic? Because it showed the truth about at least part of the contemporary theatre, the one that puts on make-up of bright lights, colourful costumes, loud music and big television screens...All of this to cover emptiness. It´s much harder to make a naked theatre.

Don´t get me wrong. I like the idea of using films in theatre. I just don´t like it when they replace something else - the magic feeling between the audience and the actors. Theatre should still remain theatre, not just a film production with a commentary on the side. What will be the next step? An internet play with a computer standing on the stage instaed of actors?
Films combined with theatre can be a fascinating experience - ganz, ganz, ganz toll as long as we don´t forget that The Play should be something more than just an empty TV show. Ganz richtig? Oder bin ich altmodisch?
